| Description: | In the last few years, the world of education has changed significantly as more and more teaching and learning blends online opportunities with face-to-face classes. Web-based communication has exploded, in large part due to the emergence and increased popularity of social networking web sites like Facebook and Twitter. What are the implications of social networking to education? And how are educators using social networks to not only engage their students but also connect with each other? For answers to underlying questions about social networking and education, join colleagues at the closing event for UD's 2009 Summer Faculty Institute. At 10 a.m., Friday, June 5, in Trabant Multi-Purpose Room A, keynote speaker, Dr Alec Couros will present "A Tweet and a Poke: How Educators Harness the Power of Social Network". This session will address these questions and inspire you to explore social networking personally and for teaching. Couros, professor of educational technology and media and the Coordinator of Information and Communications Technology at the Faculty of Education, University of Regina, is a scholar and advocate of openness in distributed learning environments. He has given hundreds of workshops and presentations, nationally and internationally, on topics such as openness in education, social/networked learning, instructional design, digital citizenship and critical media literacy. |
